Cowboys and Aliens - Wild Wild West version of 1Malaysia, non?

the Trailer:

the Plot:

terbongkang!

In 1873, Arizona Territory, an unnamed loner (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the desert injured, with no memory and with a strange metal shackle on his wrist.

the metal shackle is irremovable

After killing 3 drifters who try to rob him, he takes their clothes, weapons and a horse.

He wanders into the small town of Absolution, where the local preacher, Meacham (Clancy Brown), treats his wound.

doc, the bar owner was fed up getting harrassed by Percy, the son of the town rich

the annoying Percy, son of no good

After the stranger subdues Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano), a volatile drunk who has been terrorizing the town, Sheriff Taggart (Keith Carradine) recognizes the stranger as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw, and attempts to arrest him. Jake beats up the posse sent to take him in and nearly escapes, but a mysterious woman named Ella Swenson (Olivia Wilde) knocks him out.

Percy's father, Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford), a wealthy and ruthless cattleman, arrives with his men and demands that Percy be released from the jail due for Santa Fe.

He sees Jake and also demands he be released to him, since Jake was the one who stole Dolarhyde's gold. During the standoff, alien craft begin attacking the town. Percy, the sheriff and many other townsfolk are grabbed by long, whip-like feelers hanging from the bottom of the alien ships and are abducted.

Jake's shackle unfolds and becomes a weapon, shooting down one of the ships with a single shot, ending the attack.

the townfolks have no interest nor show any awe at seeing a flying craft for the first time in their life.

Dolarhyde is impressed with Jake's ability to shoot down the alien ship.

Ella is the only female with gun, why is it the town not apprehensive about her?

Dolarhyde, his Apache right hand-man Nat (Adam Beach), Ella, Doc (Sam Rockwell), Meacham and other townsfolk form a posse to track an injured alien that escaped from the downed ship. His posse also includes Emmet (Noah Ringer), Taggart's grandson.

Jake, meanwhile, travels to an abandoned cabin, and in a flashback, recalls returning there with the gold just before he and a woman, Alice (Abigail Spencer), were abducted by the aliens. His memories returning, Jake joins up with the posse. During the night, while they camp in an upside down paddlewheel steamboat, the alien they were tracking kills Meacham, who sacrifices himself to save Emmett .

By the next morning, most of the posse has deserted, and the others are attacked by Jake's former gang. Jake, who stole the gang's loot after their last heist, attempts to retake control, but fails.

As he and the others flee, the aliens begin attacking again and Ella is captured. Jake jumps aboard the ship and attacks the alien pilot, causing the ship to crash, but Ella is fatally wounded. in delirium, Jake carried her back to the remaining posse.

However the Chiricahua Apaches capture the posse, blaming them for the alien attacks. As Ella's body is dumped on a fire, she is fully resurrected.

Ella resurrected without her clothes on, isk.. wayang free je

Ella reveals herself to be an alien who traveled to Earth to help resist the invaders after they destroyed her homeworld. The aliens, who have been abducting humans to perform experiments, are also mining gold to power their machines. They are not invulnerable, however: Jake's gauntlet weapon can kill them, as well as stabbing and shooting them, though the creatures are far stronger and more durable than humans and have superior weapons.

Ella also claims Jake holds the secret to the aliens' whereabouts and says they must stop them before they exterminate all life on the planet. After taking medicine offered by the Apaches to cure his amnesia, Jake recalls that Alice was euthanized after she was used in an alien experiment, but he escaped, inadvertently stealing the alien weapon in the form of a gauntlet. He could also remember the location of the aliens' base of operations.

the Apache leader believes in Dolarhyde's ability as a leader, oh so easily

Armed with this knowledge, the group including the Apaches as Nat convinces their leader of Dolarhyde's ability as a battle leader, prepares to attack the aliens' grounded mothership.

Jake returns to his old gang, sure of himself, and persuades them to join the fight with the promise of gold mined by the aliens.

kasi bom dinamit sama dia!

In a sneak attack, the humans breach the spaceship, forcing the aliens into a ground battle.

alien huduh, tak lawa macam Ella

Jake and Ella board the ship and free the captives, but Jake is captured. Dolarhyde rescues him and both men escape the ship after killing the alien leader.

the Alien leader who has a (scarred) bone to pick with Jake

As the remaining aliens are taking off in their damaged craft, Ella sacrifices herself, destroying the ship using Jake's gauntlet.

Jake's memory partially returns, and some abducted townsfolk begin to remember their past. Still a wanted man, Jake decides to leave; the sheriff and Dolarhyde say they will claim that he was killed in the invasion. The citizens intend to rebuild the town with the expectation that the newly discovered gold mine will soon bring many new settlers. Jake kindly rejects Dolarhyde's offer to help rebuild the town, and rides away.

the Review:
to tell you the truth, i have tried watching the movie for 3 times only to postpone it after 5 mins. but this last time, i persevered.

and another truth, i had to persuade myself to watch it to the end. so it wasn't a gripping story, so slow in its storytelling and uncompelling most of the times. perhaps that explain why it is not a commercial success.

but i like its underlying theme: unity transcending skin colour and intergalactic romance a la 1Malaysia. ha ha ha

Nat, a son that Dolarhyde wished was his
one scene though do touch my hearstrings, the one where Nat died saving Dolarhyde. it was really sad..

the 2.5 star the movie deserves owes it to the gripping trailer. one of the examples where the Trailer is indeed a much better representation of the story than the film itself.

oh well. Daniel Craig looks good though.

mamat-mamat bajet hensem :)

Anacondas: the Hunt for the Blood Orchid

the Poster:
poster yg tak semenggah. capital FAIL !

the Trailer:

the Plot:

the motley Crew

A team of researchers sets off into a jungle in Padrang - Borneo, Indonesia to search for a "blood orchid", a flower they believe can be used as a type of fountain of youth.

Though their guide Bill Johnson (Johnny Messner) has misgivings about which path to take, Jack Byron (Matthew Marsden) bribes him to take the path he doesn't think is safe.

The team ends up going over a waterfall and having to wade through the river.

the failure of the engine brought them over

everything comes down, you could feel the swoosh!

they brave the swamp with little of what they have

Cole felt something is not right

why not, there is an anaconda swishing in between them!

A giant anaconda then emerges from the water and swallows Dr. Ben Douglas (Nicholas Gonzalez) whole, while the rest of the team escapes the river. Bill tries to assure them that it was the largest snake he's ever seen and that it should take weeks' for it to grow hungry again, however Gail as the representative of their benefactor demands that the expedition be called off.

They decide to travel to Bill's friend John Livingston (Andy Anderson) who lives on the river to see if he can borrow his boat. While traveling to the boat, Bill tells Sam (KaDee Strickland) about Jack bribing him into taking the unsafe route. Along the way, Bill finds an infestation of leeches on Cole's (Eugene Byrd) back and burns all of them with his lighter while Tran (Karl Yune) finds a poisonous spider in Gordon Mitchell's (Morris Chestnut) shoe. Jack decides to take the spider along for further study and then everyone resumes the journey to the boat.

However, Livingston is killed by another anaconda and his boat crashes into the riverbank. The team sees an explosion and finds the boat wrecked and are devastated for the loss.

the stuffs left from Livingstone's boat wreck are not enough

They then decided to ask the nearby native villagers for a boat to use. While continuing their journey, they find Livingston's chewed up corpse.

Bill realizes that it must be mating season, which means all of the male anacondas come out of their territories to find the nearest female in its mating pit.

They find themselves in a small native village consisting of thatched huts where a disemboweled anaconda with a pair of human legs hanging out of the snake's abdomen is displayed. The team speculates that the snakes are unusually large in size because their lives have been extended through the orchids, which are a part of the local food chain.

the carving by the well at the native village

Jack says that since they must be close to the orchids, they should press on. However the others contend that there is no evidence that the orchids will have the same effect on humans and still want to leave, so they start building an escape raft using the woods gathered from the vacant houses.

Meanwhile, Gordon discovers that Jack had secretly obtained Livingston's private case containing a radio and a gun and realizes he could have called for help long ago. When Jack is unable to convince him to allow the expedition to continue, he paralyzes him using the spider. As Jack joins the others at the raft, Sam discovers a paralyzed Gordon and notices the spider bite on his arm. While Sam was interrogating Jack about what he had done to Gordon, an anaconda drops down from the rafters and swallows Gordon alive soon after she leaves the building.

the paralysed Gordon can't do anything to save himself

they could only watch Gordon being swallowed alive, unable to do a thing too

the others arrive just as it finishes swallowing Gordon whole, so Bill sets the building on fire. Jack uses the commotion to steal the raft.

With no more material to make another raft, they decide to bushwack through the jungle to beat Jack to the orchids and get back their raft. On the way they fall into a cave trying to escape an anaconda. Cole gets lost and panics after finding a skeleton. He runs into Tran. Together they make their way back to the others. Along the way, Tran falls through a hole in the cave floor. Unable to escape, he is eaten by an anaconda underwater. The terrified Cole manage to make their way back to the team, escaping the caves behind them seconds ahead of the snake. It follows them through the hole, and attacks them. Sam uses a machete to behead the snake, but Cole is captured by another giant anaconda. The team follows and find him being constricted, but still alive. Bill throws his knife and impales the snake through the head, killing it and freeing Cole.

The group finds the raft just as Jack finds the blood orchids, hanging precariously above a pit in which a ball of male anacondas are mating with the female.

jackass!

Jack shoots Bill in the arm, and forces the party to accompany him to the orchids. He has Sam cross the pit via a thin log to fill a backpack with orchids. As she makes her way back, the log starts to crack. Jack orders her to throw him the backpack, but Sam counters to threaten to drop the flowers into the pit unless he drops the gun. The log breaks and she falls, landing halfway down the pit. As the others help her climb out, Jack tries to get the backpack. The spider like the one Jack used to paralyze Gordon bites him. Jack falls into the pit and is devoured, as Sam and the others escape.

The female anaconda notices them, but Gail (Salli Richardson) tricks it into biting their fuel container. Bill tries to shoot the container, but the gun is empty. Cole shoots it with a flare, causing a chain reaction that kills the snakes, along with all the blood orchids as well. Bill, Sam, Cole, Gail, and Bill's pet monkey Kong make it back to the raft and leave. As they set off with their raft, Bill suggests another shortcut much to the chagrin of others.

the Characters:

funny Cole
flirty Dr Ben

dependable Bill

tough Sam

treacherous |Jack

lucky Gail

ill-fated Morris

the Riviu:

now that i've finished watching the absorbing Once Upon a Time Season 1, i was free to watch and review one of my favourite action-beast movie: the Hunt for the Black Orchid. it was riveting, suspenseful and funny at times. but i do love the machismo of Bill and Tran. they made the journey seems safe enough with their buff arms :ehem:

anyway, this movie got itself criticised for being geographically incorrect. Anacondas do not dwell in Borneo, people. trust me. here we only have phythons or what Tran would say: Ular Sawa. as for labah-labah batu aka stone spider, that i do not know.

it also perplexes me when even though it was so called a rainy season, their journey was not at all hampered by rain. plus, the passengers of the boat did not bother to wear a safety jacket. the boat didn't even have a life preserver. surely the USD50,000 given for the journey should at least include those safety measures just for the sake of decency. plus they are passing through a rather wild frontier, shouldn't they bother about insect repellant and protection from leeches and whatnots? ni mesti tak nak these guys look less macho kan?

however one of the reasons why i like this story is that its characters transform from being a petty frightened people into survivors. that applies to Sam mainly and Gail secondly. and the fact that there are survivors that are not limited to the hero/heroin, it's a fresh turn for its genre. you see, even Gail and Cole want to live and leave the place also.. if you must know, one of the best moments would be when Sam first slaughtered the anaconda chasing Cole. pure satisfaction! such so that Bill is reduced to supporting role of a hero.

and the 3 stars are a bit too many but this movie owes it to these two men :)

the husky sound of Bill's voice, perghhh.. handsome!

senyum Tran yang amat manis

yup, i think i'm too generous but then this is my 5th rounds at watching this movie and still i like it, despite the unimaginative poster we have up there. yux!

the Ventriloquist: a short story on how a life is changed

the Poster:

the Trailer:

the movie:

the Plot:
Kevin Spacey plays Frank a shy and lonely ventriloquist whose puppet, Higgins, is much more outgoing (and outspoken) than he is. At just over 10 minutes in length, "The Ventriloquist" packs a whole lot of funny into its short running time and delivers one heck of a performance by Spacey as both the puppet master and the dummy.

in short 8 mins or so, we are treated to the story of miserable Frank who makes ends meet by being a Ventriloquist constantly heckled by his puppet. Frank secretly admires Stephanie (Erin Cahill), the girl who tends to a coffee stall he always frequents. one day, Higgins spilled out Frank's feelings for her and this spirals into an embarrassment as Stephanie politely refuses Higgins' invitation for a date with Frank. Higgins later on eggs on a passerby which results in Frank having a black eye.

at home, Frank's misery and anger further seethes as Higgins keep nagging on him, and Frank finally snaps.

the next morning, Higgins is missing. Frank frantically searches for him but in vain. he sits miserably at a bus stand until a lady cheerfully greets him good morning. Frank soon realises that finally without Higgins, his life is changing, maybe better. consoled with this fact, he finally smiles and looks on happily.

the Riviu:
to think that KS really operates Higgins, that is really COOL, old skool COOL ! the story was simple and straightforward. and in the span of 8 mins or so, a story about a person and how he can change his life is simply put forth to us the audience. without fail. perhaps the theme of thiws story is that we often let our outer self to tell things that we think the world wanna hears. but what is important is that we let our true inner self to come forth. with that maybe we will have a chance at changing our lives.

from what i think of Higgins-Frank conversation is that it's all in his mind. once Frank snaps at Higgins, he no longer sees him exist. perhaps the puppet was on the table but Frank could no longer see Higgins as the extension of his self, and thus the puppet ceases to exist.

i dunno, well, that's what i think. what do you think?

TSM: Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison

i was watching Once Upon a Time, a tv series about fairy tales retold and discovered that GG of Something Borrowed is quite similar to JM of tv series House. no wonder they played mother-daughter roles in OUAT.

in fact, there is this blog that thinks these 2 actresses resemble each other. don't you think so too?

maybe GG is much rounder compared to the sharp features of JM.

Songlap... a human trafficking story

Songlap means to steal away

the Poster:

the Trailer:

the Plot:
The movie is about two brothers: Am (Shaheizy Sam) and Ad (Syafie Naswip), who in the desperation of life in big metropolis KL; work in a human trafficking syndicate which takes in girls with unwanted pregnancies, takes care of them and sells their babies on the black market.

Am has resigned to their fate, scavenging for scraps and tough luck in order to survive. He resists any change because he thinks that this is the only way to survive in this world. He is obedient and yet could be sneaky if he could get away with it. Whatever crime that he did, one thing that he never do is desert his younger brother, Ad.

Ad, his younger brother on the other hand is desperate for change and more hopeful in life. He tries to enter a dancing competition to win the prize of RM50,000 in order to escape their pathetic fate, but somehow does not succeed in the competition. Other than Am, he has a friend, Razak (Izzue Islam), a mat pet (drug addict) who believes in him and is his sole companion. One morning, Razak dies of overdose and Ad's world started to unravel as he flees the scene.

As Ad met Hawa, who was in an unwanted pregnancy situation and was picked up by the syndicate, he recognised that Hawa is Razak's sister and he simply grabs Hawa's baby and her along to escape from the syndicate, regardless of what will happen.

the Review:
the storyline treats us as mature audiences who are able to put things together to obtain comprehension. the story is simple, yet with heavy concepts, murkier background and gritty realisation of pain, passion and how far in hell do people go to live their lives.

Ad represents the younger generation, idealistic, full of hope and bravery in doing what he thinks right. though with his limited upbringing, he tries to instill respect in his interaction with the prostitute he thought as his mother (Normah Damanhuri), using "saya" instead of "aku". it implies that though he was removed from the normal family institution, he knew that parents are the ones that he should show respect regardless of their way of living. and the scene where he hugs Am to beg him to go to Kuantan together was rather touching.

as for Am, he is sneaky and yet obedient, surviving day to day, doing what's in store for him in order to get paid. what he knew is to collect money and more money, regardless of any conscience. but i do suspect that he does have a conscience, only limited and reserved to babies, that instead of raising a child single handedly, what is better to do is to let go of the child for adoption where the child has better chance in life than the original mother can provide. this is one example of his acceptance of his fate: that his mother should have given up on him instead of trying to raise him and Ad together only to hurt him in the end.

the story reveals itself moment by moment, it does not preach nor need everything to be shown by glimpses of the past to let audiences know what had happened. by the agony of Am as he asks Hawa to let go of her baby, we got to know that his mother has tried to raise him herself only to beat him up when she's unable to stop him crying for food etc.

and i rather like the theme of survival of the fittest carried in this movie. Abang Mat (Hasnul Rahmat) was thought to be the biggest Fish in the pond as he preached at Am to not continue be the servant of Mama's Jason and follow him instead. his constant preening and belittling towards his assistant prove to be fatal as his assistant turns up to be a traitor in cahoots with Jason. at the end of the movie, it proves that this mantra serves to help Am survive and be freed from those who oppress him.

basically Am is a good brother who has his brother's best interest in mind all the time. the fact that though he at first belittled Ad's ambition to win RM50 thousand in a dance competition, still he did drop Ad at the competition and went in to watch him dance. and when the judge asked Ad about whether he's still a student or not and Ad answered "no", Am being his big brother does cringe and show some sort of regret about that. and he repeatedly asked Jason not to hurt Ad though his brother had repeatedly defied him by taking Hawa and her baby away with their shared money.

as for Hawa, she was silent in almost every scene but as she develops a bond with her baby, her voice seems to find sound again to protect her and the baby. we need not the scene where her father rapes her, it was told simply by Hawa's beseeching questions, "whose baby is this?"

it is a human trafficking story in its simplest sense. when a father bargained his daughter's future with his lust, when a mother bargained her body to gain money, when a man bargained his services/obedience for more money. plus the obvious prostitution and baby selling.

it's a damning reality that still happens if we care to spend time in the gutters to have a look at what was told in this film. but then, we will be bargaining our conscience as we walk away, achieving nothing.

i give this story 4.5 star for its simplicity in story telling a very heavy society problem. a must watch for those who want to learn a great story telling style.
